Statistics is a science concerned with the collection, organization, analysis, interpretation, and presentation of data. It deals with making inferences, deducing information from the raw data and reporting obtained results. Statistical analyses provide many different methods which are used in different areas. As an interdisciplinary science, Statistics makes a significant contribution to many different disciplines such as Health Sciences, Social Sciences, Economics and Administrative Sciences, Engineering and Natural Sciences. Statistics which has been getting used more and more widely for last couple of decades, without even realizing it, has become a part of our daily life. With the technological advances in computer science larger databases were required to be created and this leads to needs for new data analysis methods. Statistical models and techniques are tools that enable us to produce valuable information and to make decisions under partial knowledge or uncertainty. It is very much essential to correctly interpret the data from governmental practices, industrial and commercial sources. There has been an increasing need for statisticians (data scientists) who are expected to handle these masses of data. In addition to providing basic statistics teaching support to other departments, our department also aims to expand its interdisciplinary ties with other departments of our university as well as other universities.
